Gift Surgeries - Zang Ren Wei
Zhang Ren Wei was born with severe facial
deformities and abandoned at the age of 3. His facial
deformities were caused by hypertelorism and a mid-face cleft.
As a result, his eyes were too far apart and he was missing a
nostril. An intelligent and otherwise healthy boy, Ren Wei could
not attend school because of his disfigurement. Unable to
perform this complex surgery in China, CCPR Volunteer Pat
Farrell provided the needed funds to transport Ren Wei to the
Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian. Jeffrey Ascherman,
MD arranged for the hospital stay and headed a 15 member team to
perform a series of three complex and delicate surgeries. The
first procedure was the most dangerous, taking over 15 hours.
The team successfully unmasked Ren Wei’s skull, reforming his
cheek and eye sockets to align his eyes. Pat Farrell sponsored
Ren Wei’s stay in New York and provided transportation from
China and back. Between surgeries, Ren Wei was tutored in
English, other subjects, and mastered Game Boy. Ren Wei’s smile
now comes from a new face, warming everyone around him.
